Kastav to host carnival in January
28 November 2008The Croatian town of Kastav is to host its annual carnival in January next year, which will attract tourists and natives to join in the celebrations.
Known as the Kastav Winter Festival, the event traditionally takes place from St Anthony's day on January 17th through to Ash Wednesday.
People from the participating surrounding villages are represented by the Zvoncari, which are groups of performers wearing grotesque masks.
Others wear sailors' outfits with lamb pelts over their soldiers and parades are carried out in the streets while groups perform traditional dances.
Many of the performers attach bells to their belts and collide with each other to create lots of noise to add to the dances and parades.
The annual International Carnival of Rijeka, which is close to Kastav, is to take place early next year and will involve ancient folklore elements and mythology.
It is a 100-year-old tradition which is a blend of customs and attracts carnival groups, spectators and guests from around Croatia and abroad.
