Language skills can add to enjoyment of stay in Croatia accommodation
10 September 2010People set to stay in accommodation in Croatia over the coming weeks and months may be wise to learn a few words of the local language, if one expert's advice is accurate.
Tamzin Caffrey, head of marketing, press and publishing at the National Centre for Languages (CILT), says holidaymakers who make the effort will be rewarded with an enhanced cultural experience of the country.
Even simple greetings and pleasantries could be enough to bond with native people and learn a little more about Croatia.
"Don't be self-conscious when you get there and have a go at speaking. You can always ask if people understand you, so this phrase is also useful to learn," she urges.
While the most tourist-friendly destinations, such as Dubrovnik and Split, are likely to be English-speaking, knowledge of key sayings may help those who wish to venture further into Croatia to explore.
The benefits of a second language are not only found on holiday though, with a CILT poll conducted earlier this year showing employers rate it second only to IT in terms of desirable skills.
