Magical Christmas market in northern Istria

Experience a traditional and non-commercial Christmas on holiday in Croatia this year by visiting the Christmas markets in Brtonigla.

This small town in northern Istria is not far from Italy, with 29 per cent of the population speaking Italian as their mother tongue.

A villa in Istria is a good base to enjoy Brtonigla (Verteneglio in Italian) and the surrounding countryside.

The market features many typical local and Italian products, original gift ideas, and of course food and the hot, spiced vino brule.

The festival starts on December 14th and runs for three days, featuring the presentation of the nativity scene, choirs singing, dancing with local band 'Tu i tamo', and a traditional Christmas concert on Saturday evening at 19:00 local time.

There will be a number of opportunities for children to meet the town's Father Christmas and children are generally quite the focus of celebrations. There will be performances by primary and kindergarten school children.

The finale on Sunday evening is the grand performance of the Brtonigla church choir, followed by dancing with the band 'Trio saltin'.

Once a Roman settlement, this beautiful town has been in existence since the early 12th century and preserves many exquisite ancient churches and towers from the Middle Ages.
