Montenegro applies to enter the EU
18 December 2008The republic of Montenegro has formally applied to join the European Union (EU) after prime minister Milo Djukanovic made the request this week.
At a meeting in Paris with France's president Nicolas Sarkozy, who holds the rotating EU presidency, Mr Djukanovic applied for the position.
Montenegro, which has a population of 680,000, is a former Yugoslav republic that split from Serbia in 2006 after a national referendum, which led to its independence.
The country has already signed a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU in October 2007, which was the first stage in its request for membership.
Great Britain wants to see Croatia complete its talks about entry into the EU and end accession negotiations as soon as possible, the Croatian prime minister has said.
Ivo Sanader was speaking after a meeting with the British secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs David Miliband in New York this week.
