Much of the infrastructure to make Croatia the centre of European travel 'is in place'
20 November 2009Croatia could become Europe's premier base for travellers on a European adventure thanks to its central location.
President of Croatia Stjepan Mesic is calling for funds to be poured into developing top-quality rail links in the Balkan country.
That would allow it to offer high-speed comfortable train journeys to surrounding countries such as Serbia, Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Hungary.
Great transport links are vital for any country hoping to attract large numbers of tourists - something Croatia has recognised with the vast investment in its motorway network over the last decade.
An improved rail system would also help Croatia take advantage of European export markets, bringing in more cash to spend on improving the infrastructure it offers visitors.
With an impressive road and air transport provision already in place, the inclusion of high-speed trains could make Croatia the perfect location from which to explore Europe.
The announcement this week that budget flights are to be available between Zagreb and Belgrade could further improve Croatia's reputation as a European tourist hub.
