New Zagreb trains are on their way
27 April 2009The first of Zagreb's new fleet of suburban trains have been officially unveiled, with the planned infrastructure improvements set to spell good news for anyone looking to enjoy a Croatian villa holiday in or around the capital.
Though the whole transportation project is not expected to be completed before the end of the year, the national train-building company Janko Gredelj has already produced a prototype of the locomotive that will be rolled out across the city.
In all, 18 trains, each capable of carrying 500 passengers, will be introduced, thereby improving journey times to the Zagreb suburbs for locals and holidaymakers alike.
Explaining the process, Gredelj head Antun Fabek expressed his confidence that the infrastructure improvements will go ahead as planned, in spite of the current financial climate.
"Once we start to produce trains in series they will cost around 4.5 million Euros each," he was quoted by the Hrvatski Information Centre as saying.
"Now, the prototype cost twice as much because we need to develop the technology."
Serving the heart of Zagreb, the historic funicular railway has become more of a tourist attraction than a means of public transportation over the past few decades.
