New Zealand foreign minister praises Croatia

The foreign minister of New Zealand has praised Croatia ahead of his visit to the country.

Winston Peters will be stopping off in Croatia on his way round Europe and has revealed that the two countries could become much closer in the future.

Mr Peters said: "The visit to Croatia is a chance to establish more regular dialogue. Croatia has been invited to join NATO and is next in line for EU membership, so we will certainly have a much closer relationship in the future."

He added that people from Dalmatia moving over to Australia have given the two countries "close, historical ties".

During his time visiting eastern Europe, Mr Peters will also be paying a visit to Slovenia.

A number of countries have already voiced their support for Croatia's plans to become a member of the EU. The Netherlands and Lithuania have spoken out in recent weeks to back the Balkan country.
