P1 Powerboat World Championship to launch in Croatia

The city of Split in Croatia has been named as the host of the opening rounds of the P1 Powerboat World Championship, it has been revealed.

According to Sail World, the Dalmatian city will be the prestigious host of the glamorous event that will likely attract thousands of tourists from all around the world to Croatia.

Tomislav Blago Misetic, local promoter for the Croatian Grand Prix of the Sea, told the nautical news provider: "An event like the Powerboat P1 World Championship race in Split represents the future for Croatian tourism. It is the perfect way of promoting Split as one of the world's top tourist destinations, especially as a nautical venue.

"Staging this event in April 2010 will contribute significantly to extending the tourist season in this region which is vital given the current economic climate."

Sail World also noted that the area has already attracted well in excess of 200,000 tourists so far in 2009.

Croatia has been well and truly placed on the maritime map recently as the Adriatic Boat Show is set to get underway in Sibenik this month.
