Paper aeroplanes swoop on Split

Visitors to Croatia this week were able to take a flight of fancy with the qualifying round of Red Bull's Paper Wings 2009 tournament.

Hosted in Split, the pre-entry event saw budding aviators fold and fly their home-made paper aeroplanes, the Croatian Times reported.

Before entering the tournament, paper pilots were asked to make a decision on which event they would like to enter from the choice of longest air time, furthest distance and acrobatics.

According to the newspaper, the biggest prerequisite for entering the competition is "knowing how to fold a piece of paper".

The rules of the competition stated that all flights had to be held indoors and aircrafts must be constructed from one standard sheet of A4 paper.

What is more, the use of support materials such as glue and scissors was strictly forbidden, with the exception of the acrobatic events.

As noted in the Croatian Times, the world-record holder in the furthest distance category is Jovica Kozlica, whose aeroplane flew for almost 40 metres.
