Plitvice Lakes 'attracts record number of travellers to Croatia'
06 January 2011An all-time record number of tourists travelled to Croatia last year in order to visit the country's picturesque Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Some 981,000 individuals showed up at the beauty spot, according to figures published by its PR department and cited by the Croatian Times following a report by Vjesnik.
This allowed it to enjoy its highest-ever arrivals count, while the amount of overnight stays also hit a peak.
The numbers were five per cent up on 2009, with the majority of those who showed up at the park coming from France, Germany and Italy, the news source explains.
Meanwhile, the greatest increase in organised tours was in Japan, whose tourists also contributed to the national park's 50 million kunas (£5.7 million) profit.
Plitvice Lakes is popular because of its iconic waters and rolling countryside, perhaps making it the perfect spot for a walking holiday.
Visit Croatia suggests it is the most popular of all the country's tourist attractions.
