Pope hints at Croatia trip
29 June 2009Pope Benedict XVI could soon be set to take a trip to Croatia, it has emerged.
At a meeting with Croatian foreign minister Gordan Jandrokovic at the Vatican, the Pope stated: "Croatia has always been in my heart and I hope to visit your country in the near future."
Indeed, Mr Jandrokovic has invited the head of the Catholic church to visit Croatia, as he thanked him for the work that the Vatican has done for the country, in particular supporting its accession to the European Union, the Croatian Times reports.
During the meeting Jandrokovic gave the Pope a special lace work crafted by nuns at the Benedict Monastery on Hvar Island.
The foreign minister also took the time to meet with Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone - who himself went on a trip to Croatia in 2009.
Should the Pope wish to visit the place where his gift was produced, he will find - among other things - the oldest communal theatre in Europe.
