Popularity of holidays in Dubrovnik 'surged in 2010'

The desire to take a holiday in Dubrovnik rose considerably over the last 12 months, according to the latest tourism figures.

Numbers released by the Dubrovnik Tourist Board and reported by the Croatian Times show 588,534 people decided to visit the ancient city, located on the southern tip of Croatia.

This was a rise of 13 per cent on 2009 levels, while there was also a total of 2,192,254 overnight stays – up 14 per cent on the previous year.

With in excess of 66,000 people travelling to Dubrovnik in the 12-month period, Britain provided the largest share of holidaymakers, the newspaper reveals.

Behind the UK was Spain and France – with 53,608 and 52,807 tourists respectively – with domestic guests taking fourth place.

Samantha Daniels, writing for the Huffington Post, recently described the city as a must-visit destination for anybody in the area due to its mixture of beauty, warm climate and history.
