Recession making shorter breaks more popular

The recession is changing the way people take their holidays, with two-week trips becoming less popular.

That is according to Francesca Ecsery, global sales director of Cheapflights, who said that the way people holiday is changing.

She said: "The tradition of a two week summer holiday has evolved into taking a series of shorter breaks with some travellers looking to minimise their spend in the recession, while others aren't willing to take an extended break from the office.

"The recession is not only hitting the travel industry hard but may be creating long-term trends in consumers' holiday habits."

According to Cheapflights, 55 per cent of respondents to a recent poll asserted that they would prefer to take a shorter summer break this year of one week or less.

This could potentially spell an increase in the popularity of short and mid-haul holiday destinations for British tourists such as Croatia, which is only a short flight from the UK.
