Rijeka Carnival may make Croatia top February holiday destination
26 January 2010A traditional Croatian carnival could be of interest to tourists planning a holiday in the Balkan country.
Rijeka Carnival started last week and runs until February 17th, which could give potential travellers plenty of time to book a Croatian villa, flights and head to the Adriatic coast.
Describing the event, the Croatian National Tourist Board states: "The sea of masks will spread good humour for days, while the climax of the Carnival comes on its closing day when the grand parade makes its thunderous way across the city."
During the carnival the city gates are locked in order for those inside to party and celebrate one of Croatia's most historic and beautiful cities.
The carnival has been running for many centuries - with the masks an ancient tradition dating back to its very start.
Rijeka is located in the north of Croatia - close to the border with Slovenia - and is easily accessible by road, sea or air after numerous recent upgrades to its transport network.
