The Croatian National Tourist Board puts forward the ancient city as a potential venue for the life-changing question.

As one of Europe's most famous medieval cities, Dubrovnik offers plenty of historic and beautiful backdrops, while its cable car that takes visitors to the top of the overlooking Mount Srd may be what potential proposers are looking for.

The organisation advises heading to the top - where "breathtaking" views are on offer - and getting down on one knee.

Couples who travel to Dubrovnik for Valentine's Day will find their break coincides with the city's annual carnival, perhaps providing another reason to enjoy a break at this time.
