Sailing stunt could draw sea-loving tourists to Croatia

Maritime enthusiasts may wish to book up a Croatian villa and head to the Balkan country to enjoy a unique boating stunt.

A group of Croatian sailors who crossed the English Channel in a gondola earlier this year are to use the same method of transport to conquer the Adriatic Sea, reports the Croatian Times.

They will start in Neretva, in the south of the country, before reaching their destination in the Molise region on Italy's east coast.

Some Molise Croats, living on the Italian side of the Adriatic, will also take part in the unusual challenge.

According to the Neretva Sailors Association, the Traces of the Ancient project will call on the services of five teams - with each using long, wooden boats shaped like the world-famous gondolas of Venice.

Earlier this year the above-average quality of sea water on the Adriatic coast was cited by the country's Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction as one of Croatia's strongest selling points.
