Samobor 'set to welcome tourists searching for authentic Croatian experience'

Tourists looking to go off the beaten track and experience an authentic Croatian holiday may be pleased to learn that the Samobor Carnival is due to start next week.

The carnival is, according to the Croatian National Tourism Board, "the most anxiously awaited event in Samobor".

It has long been thought of as the leading event for northern Croatia, with the town located a short distance from the capital Zagreb.

According to the tourism board, the carnival is "a rampant manifestation by which the people of Samobor chase away evil spirits from the year that just ended, bid goodbye to winter and open their hearts and hopes to the upcoming spring".

Included in the carnival proceedings are a number of shows which take place in Samobor's main square.

Rijeka, the historic city west of Samobor, is currently holding its carnival which lasts until February 17th, with arguably the highlight coming next week when it holds a snowboarding session.
