Sculptor Dzamonja dies aged 81
14 January 2009The revered Croatian sculptor Dusan Dzamonja has died aged 81 years old, leaving a legacy of esteemed work behind him.
Born in 1928, his work has been exhibited in galleries across the world, including Brussels' Palace of Justice, Paris's Palace de Vendome and Lisbon's Praca de Commercio.
After a long battle with Diabetes, Dzamonja finally succumbed to the illness at his home in the Croatian capital of Zagreb.
As reported in the Earth Times: "His works showed a tendency towards experiments, his style was modern and very expressionistic, with intense shapes and symbolical meaning."
Dzamonja - who first began showcasing his work in the early 1950s - was also acclaimed for his innovative use of nails, steel and glass in his artistic output.
Although born in Macedonia, Dzamonja spent much of his life in Croatia, where he studied at the University of Zagreb's Academy of Fine Arts.
