Spear fishing on new year Croatian vacations

Fishing enthusiasts taking Croatian vacations over the new year period could indulge themselves in a slightly different form of their favourite pastime.

That is because December 28th to 30th are the dates scheduled for the three-day New Year Spear Fishing Championship.

An annual event, each time held just before the new year, the contest celebrates the heritage of spear-fishing skills held in high esteem by the residents of the Croatian island of Losinj.

"It is an opportunity to celebrate the new year in the company of extremely brave people and a truly sportsmanlike environment," the Croatian National Tourist Board asserts.

For those taking Croatian vacations ahead of the new year - or to spend December 31st itself overseas - the spectacle of spear fishing could be cause for cheer.

The Croatian National Tourist Board explains that Croatia offers a nautical "heaven" thanks to its ports and marinas and its naturally occurring bays, beaches and harbours.
