Split beautiful in autumn
15 September 2009The Croatian City of Split has been highlighted as being at its "sparkling best" in the autumn by a travel writer.
Simon Calder, writing for the Independent, said that now is a great time to visit as there are less holidaymakers but the weather is still summery and pleasant.
There is much to do in the ancient city on the Dalmatian coast, including visits to the cathedral or the Roman palace.
Mr Calder also advises taking in the tourist shops as they add an "interesting dimension" to the area, and visiting the city's great bars such as Decumanus that promise an unusual and unique experience.
Split is the second largest city in the country, with a population of over 200,000, meaning there is a lot to do and see whether you are staying for a short period or exploring the region more extensively.
Other highlights in the ancient city that should not be missed are the People's Square on the western side of the palace and the Mestrovic Gallery, which has been open since 1952.
