Split home to 'spectacular coastline'
25 March 2009The Croatian port of Split is home to some of the Adriatic's most spectacular coastline, it has been claimed.
Writing for the Times newspaper, travel journalist Tony Dawe has singled out the country's second city as a culturally rich and beautiful holiday destination.
Among its attractions are stunning seafront views and imposing historical architecture, the writer noted.
Mr Dawe wrote: "Behind a modern waterfront promenade is an astonishing building: Diocletian's Palace, a huge, square Roman citadel built in AD300.
"Along its southern facade are 42 windows, designed so that the Emperor Diocletian could enjoy a continuous view of the sea as he strolled the inner corridor."
He also suggested that the city's location made it perfect for catching a ferry to the Dalmatian islands, including "fashionable" Hvar and "pretty" Brac.
Travellers eager to visit the Adriatic coast will be thrilled to hear that British Airways is increasing the frequency of its flights from UK airports to Dubrovnik.
