Split to enjoy start of Diocletian Days

The Croatian city of Split is set to welcome tourists from all over the world to a cultural event celebrating 1,700 years of history.

Running from August 17th to 25th the event will see revelers dress-up and take to the streets around the palace, which was built by the Roman emperor Diocletian.

Togas and tunics will be sported and a parade of ancient-style carriages will be seen on the city's waterfront.

There will also be music and street performers as well as a re-enactment of the emperor returning to Peristyle with his wife. The event ends with a Roman style feast at the Diocletian's cellars.

Mediterranean culinary delights will also be available in the streets at the event.

Split is one of the largest cities in Croatia and is a favourite for tourists due to its location on the Adriatic coast.

Holidaymakers can enjoy a range of sites and activities in the city including Bacvice beach, Pjaca Square and the marketplace, which is in close proximity to Diocletian's palace.
