'Take a day trip' to Varazdin
19 November 2008People visiting Croatia should take a trip to Varazdin in the north of the country, according to a source.
The area was famed for its baroque architecture, but visitors now often do not visit it in favour of well-trodden tourist areas, the Croatia Travel Blog reports.
Varazdin is described by the website as a "thriving town" which has a shortage of tourists and "gets far fewer visitors than it deserves".
The source states this is due to it not being on the coast of Croatia, but recommends it for a day trip if staying in Zagreb.
People in the town have worked to restore the "exquisite" town centre, which has baroque buildings and smatterings of colour.
Kroatien-Online.com says the town lies on the banks of the river Drava and is considered to be the economic and cultural centre of the Zagorje and Medimurje regions.
It adds that Varazdin has "beautiful countryside" surrounding it meaning it attracts visitors all year round.
