Croatia is one of the countries predicted to suffer the most from a shortage of hire cars this summer - meaning those heading on a Croatian holiday in 2010 could consider it a shrewd move to secure a vehicle now.

The recession has led many leading rental companies to reduce the size of their fleets.

The areas most likely to be affected by this include Croatia, as well as Italy and Greece.

A lack of advance bookings can also drive up the cost of hiring a car, with little availability and huge late demand resulting in high prices.
