The King's Speech fans could trace history on holiday in Croatia

Those who have watched and enjoyed the blockbuster movie The King's Speech might wish to take a holiday in Croatia after learning of a connection between the film and the country.

According to the Daily Mail, the island of Rab has a distant royal past that is linked to the Hollywood smash hit.

King Edward VIII – played in the production by actor Guy Pearce – is known to have travelled to Croatia to spend time in Rab with lover Wallace Simpson in 1936.

The pair are said to have dined at an upmarket hotel and taken in some of the island's sights, just months after he had abdicated from his role as monarch.

It was part of a cruise around the Mediterranean that the couple enjoyed – something travellers today could replicate.

Hvar may be another Croatian island worth a visit in the coming months, with the destination due to host the Arts and Crafts Fun Festival in May and June.
