The walls of Dubrovnik sets visitor record
07 August 2009July was a record breaking month for the walls of Dubrovnik, as they attracted 141,000 visitors.
This surpasses the previous high for the popular attraction by 4,000, which was set in July 2008, according to the Croatian Times.
The newspaper also noted that one of the factors in an improved experience for visitors to the walls has been a new efficient electronic ticket sytem.
This highlights the growing popularity of Croatia as a hotspot for global tourism.
Dubrovnik's walls are one of the most popular sights in Croatia and the Old City was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, attracted 1,000 more visitors in 2009 than in the previous year.
Croatia has been honoured with seven World Heritage locations including the Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian, the Cathedral of St James in Sibenik and Plitvice Lakes National Park.
UNESCO World Heritage sites are decided on by a process of ten different criteria and each site must have one or more of them to qualify.
