Thousands of tourists head to southern Dalmatia

The Makarska Riviera in southern Dalmatia has attracted more than 45,000 tourists, according to new data.

Something close to 45,589 holidaymakers are currently visiting the area, which is comparable with the same period in 2008, according to the Croatian Times.

Of the visitors 304,147 were located on the coast of Makarska during the first seven months of 2009, which represents only a slight decrease from last year despite the worldwide economic slump.

The Makarska Riviera is an area in between the towns of Brela and Gradac which features a myriad of sandy beaches, blue seas and the Biokovo Mountain, which make it one of the most visited areas in the country.

Makarska city is located on the Adriatic coast and is known for its lively promenade.

Figures released by the Croatian Ministry of the Interior revealed that more than 1.5 million tourists visited the country on the weekend of August 1st and 2nd, reports the Croatian Times.
