Tourists can still book accommodation in Croatia for carnival
10 February 2011Jet-setters planning to take in all the thrills of this year's Rijeka Carnival have a little more time to book accommodation in Croatia before the event gets underway.
The festival has traditions dating back several centuries, including the wearing of ferocious masks that are said to banish the bad memories of the last year.
Carefree partying and merriness are strongly encouraged as visitors are invited to revel alongside locals.
Proceedings are typically kicked off by the handing over of the keys to the city gates, which then lock out any solemnity.
A sea of masks, costumes and parades then take over, culminating in the International Carnival Parade that thunders across the resort on the last day of the event.
Rijeka's celebrations make up just one of several carnivals to have either already started or be due to begin in Croatia during the winter season, with another notable festival currently taking place in Dubrovnik.
