Tourists heading to Croatia should not forget about insurance
28 August 2009British tourists who are set to head off on holiday should not consider insurance to be a luxury item.
That is according to a spokesman for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) who was speaking after figures released by Lloyds TSB found that 54 per cent of tourists "didn't think" about travel insurance.
According to the data, one-in-ten people have been on a foreign holiday to destinations such as Croatia, in the past without insurance.
The ABI spokesman said: "It is not something that can be regarded as an add-on or a luxury. It should be something that is regarded as a central, integral part of planning any trip overseas.
"[Not buying travel insurance is a false economy and it can almost be deemed as acting recklessly."
Uninsured British tourists suffered £90 million worth of 'calamities' during 2008, according to an InsureandGo report.
Medical issues, lost or stolen baggage, flight cancellations and lost or stolen money were among the problems that Britons abroad faced without insurance.
