Traffic into Croatia expected to pick up
09 July 2009Warnings of traffic pile-ups on the southern Austrian roads were issued last week as people from the central European nation and others who were passing through descended on Croatia.
The Austrian Times reports that this time of year regularly sees more cars hit the country's roads as people head away on their Croatia holidays.
A Croatia vacation and trips to Italy are the two most popular holidays for the people of Austria, the publication said.
Meanwhile, the nation's geographical position also means that cars from neighbouring countries such as Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic also use Austrian motorways to reach the Croatian and Italian coasts.
A recent poll held by the newspaper discovered that the majority of its readers think "fleeing the country for holidays abroad" is the top thing to do during the summer months.
Croatia's tourism minister Damir Bajs told Reuters this week that visitors are staying in his country for longer periods of time than they did in previous years.
