Travel to Croatia for chance to spot rare Dalmatian pelican

Wildlife lovers may be rushing to book a holiday in Croatia after an extremely rare creature was spotted in the country.

The Dalmatian pelican – thought to have become extinct in the 1950s – has once again been identified in the nation, reports the Croatian Times, following a piece by Slobodna Dalmacija.

It was seen by an expert at the mouth of Neretva river, much to the delight of those who had been tracking it.

Dragan Radovic, president of the Croatian Ornithological Society, tells the news source the bird is famous throughout the world and was named by the ancient people of the region.

Increased police patrols in the region in recent years are thought to have beaten the threat posed by poachers and led to a revival in the amount and quality of wildlife.

The Neretva river reaches the Adriatic Sea towards the south of the Dalmatian coast, between the cities of Split and Dubrovnik.
