Travel to Krk for glimpse of rare temple
16 February 2011Holidaymakers may be putting a break in Krk towards the top of their wish lists after remains of an ancient temple were uncovered.
A local family has discovered the historic structure while attempting to refurbish a building on the island, the Croatian Times reports following a piece by Jutarnji List.
It notes the Rists were dealing with the foundations when the temple became apparent.
The temple was built in honour of the Roman goddess Venus and can be found in the island's main town, also known as Krk.
Experts believe it dates back to the first century before Christ and was probably destroyed during the time of Julius Caesar, the news source states.
Perhaps the best news for those planning holidays in Croatia is that the Rist family intends to open the temple to visitors.
Krk is located off the northern end of the Dalmatian coast, with the nearest major town being Rijeka.
