Travel to Split to visit ancient Diocletian's Palace

Interest in travelling to Split for a holiday could soar following news that a stone from an ancient tomb located in the city has been found.

The discovery is thought to be a piece of material from the resting place of the emperor Diocletian, the Croatian Times reports.

Meanwhile, it notes Croatian news agency Hina was told by historian Ivan Sikavica that the stone is made from porfir, which the tomb was known to be constructed from.

It has been sent for tests, but experts are confident it is a piece of the tomb located within Diocletian's Palace, which is the centrepiece of Split's picturesque Old Town area.

The structure dates back 1,700 years, although some parts of it are in a poorer condition than others, such as the tomb which was destroyed.

Other attractions on offer to those who travel to Split include the city's waterfront and harbour, which is due to host the Croatian Boat Show in April.
