Travels in 'affordable and beautiful' Istria
16 January 2009The Croatian region of Istria has been identified as an affordable and beautiful holiday destination by a leading travel journalist.
Writing in the Independent, David Ryan detailed his latest journey to the area, where he sampled a variety of its local seafood and wine.
Describing destinations such as Fazana, near Pula, he commented how while Croatia was not necessarily a stranger to modern tourism, it still provided something which all modern travellers could enjoy.
Mr Ryan wrote: "Britons are rediscovering Istria's sharp, blue waters and craggy coastline as well as exploring inland where cycling, walking and fishing are popular amid the lush woodland and farms with blood-red soil."
He added that the "fortified hilltop towns" and "ice-cream coloured building" evoked comparisons with the Italian region of Tuscany.
The region of Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea and is shared between Croatia, Slovenia and Italy.
