US team 'modernise Croatian weather service'

A programme at the University of Oklahoma in the US has been selected to carry out a year-long assessment on how to modernise Croatia's weather service.

Ten delegates from the university's Office of Weather Programs and Projects will now seek to determine how the service can be "brought into the 21st century" after being
chosen to take on the $500,000 task (£254,000) in an international bidding process.

Much of their job will be to update and upgrade outdated technology.

Ken Crawford, the Oklahoma Climatological Survey and Regents' professor of meteorology, said the team will travel to Croatia up to five times in the year as it looks to "reduce the impact of severe weather" in the country.

He added to local newspaper the Norman Transcript: "I think our reputation has put us on the map in just about every country in the world"

Meanwhile, it is predicted tourism could be one area of the Croatian economy boosted by better weather prediction capabilities.
