Variety of cultures 'make Vis a Croatian culture holiday hotspot'
04 January 2010The Croatian island of Vis has, in the past, been under Turkish, Serbian, Italian, Greek and British rule - a combination of cultures which has given it a truly unique identity, according to one visitor.
Although the Adriatic island is now once more run by Croatia, the lasting effects of its previous rulers help to shape a holiday on the 35 sq m body of land, says Wynne Crombie, writing for the Dallas News.
Visitors to Vis can enjoy a series of deep caves, beaches and picturesque landscapes, with those venturing towards the centre able to experience one of the Balkans' largest vineyards.
Ms Crombie states in the newspaper: "Tourists could have their pick: exploring nearby coves and caves, sailing, snorkelling and swimming. Submarines and an aeroplane or two are also a great draw. The water is so clear you can almost see the bottom."
Vis is located approximately 60 miles from the Italian coast and slightly further from Split.
