Visitors enjoying smoke-free Croatian villa holidays

Tourists taking a holiday in Croatia are now able to enjoy a smoke-free environment when dining out as the country's recently-introduced smoking laws start to take effect.

According to a new report from the Croatian Times, bars, cafes and restaurants are all adhering to the legislation, much to the delight of tourists keen to enjoy Croatia's famous fresh air.

At the same time, growing numbers of venues are opting to open outdoor terraces to cater for those visitors keen to enjoy a smoke after their evening meal or drink.

However, while the move has been welcomed by the majority of tourists, the head of the Croatian Restaurateurs Association, Miroslav Folnegovic Hulc, has called for the government to do more to protect businesses from the downturn in traffic reportedly caused by the rules, which came into effect on May 6th of this year.

According to Mr Hulc, venues across the popular tourist region of Dalmatia have been particularly hard hit, with many visitors opting to stay in to dine so that they can smoke on their own private terraces as they please.

This comes soon after Croatia's bars and restaurants were given a boost by the news that the country's wines were awarded eight gold medals at this year's Decanter World Wine Awards.
