Writer drawn to Dalmatian coast

A statue of one of America's most iconic directors may be one of many attractions on offer to visitors to Croatia's Dalmatian coast.

The statue of Orson Welles - who has been posthumously made a citizen of Croatia - has been erected in the town of Split, About.com reports.

Writing for the site, Laurie Boeder said: "I've been wanting to go to that part of the world anyway, and this just makes it all the more attractive."

According to Ms Boeder, the actor and director was in a relationship with Croatian actress and sculptor Oja Kodar during the latter years of his life.

The Southeast European Times recently reported that photographer Fedja Klaric said that Welles "loved the tiny Mediterranean stone-built streets of Split and other Dalmatian coastal towns".

"He found something in common with the fiery temperament of people in the Croatian coastal region of Dalmatia," she commented.
