Young star named Croatian athlete of 2008

One of Croatia's most-promising sporting starlets has been named the country's Athlete of the Year.

According to European Athletics, Beijing Olympic silver medallist Blanka Vlasic was the unanimous choice of both the Croatian Olympic Committee and the sports newspaper Sportske Novosti.

The high jump star captured the hearts and minds of her fellow Croatians with her performances in last year's Games, which follow an unbeaten run stretching over nearly 35 events.

Vlasic shares the accolade with the hammer throw legend Andras Haklits, who recovered from a devastating injury to eventually reach the finals in Beijing.

As reported by European Athletics, neither the Olympic Committee nor Sportske Novosti had much difficulty in choosing the 31-year-old for the male category.

Elsewhere, the Croatian national handball side has made a promising start to the World Championships in Zagreb, beat Kuwait and Cuba in their last two games.
