Zagreb lands second place in mobility award
24 February 2009The Croatian capital Zagreb has landed the award of Europe's second most mobile city.
As part of European Mobility Week, various locations around the continent were rated on the quality of their transport in areas such as sustainability and the environment, before the European Commission drew up a final shortlist of three cities.
The European commissioner for the environment, Stavros Dimas, said: "European Mobility Week is making a tangible contribution to tackling the air pollution, traffic congestion and noise from private transport that afflicts our towns and cities."
He added that the competition reflected a "real desire" in cities such as Zagreb to boost the quality of life for their residents.
Following an extensive process, the Hungarian capital Budapest was handed first place, leaving Zagreb and the Portuguese destination Almada to fight it out for the silver medal.
Also this week, the government in Croatia announced a major new tourism drive to the country utilising television, websites and newspapers, the Croatian Times reported.
