26 June 2008Members of the European parliament will be among the participants joining in with gay pride marches in Zagreb and the Turkish capital of Istanbul this weekend.
Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert is set to travel from the Netherlands to take part in Saturday's parade in the Croatian capital, while Sophie In't Veld will attend a similar event in Istanbul the next day.
Ms Hennis-Plasschaert is visiting the Croatian capital in her role as a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group ALDE 4 Equality, which promotes the equality and anti-discrimination of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
Her appearance is being made to show solidarity with LGBT citizens in Croatia, she says.
"Even though there might have been some progress in recent years, we should not forget that still a lot needs to be done to grant equal rights for LGBT people," she adds.
According to travelcroatia.com, there are numerous companies which cater to the LGBT community in the country.
