Croatian tombstones could become world heritage site
30 October 2009Travellers staying in Croatian accommodation may want to visit the remains of medieval tombstones which are scattered across Croatia and three other countries.
The country's culture minister Bozo Biskupic is hoping to persuade the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation to include the historic monuments on its list of world heritage sites, reports the Croatian Times.
Stecak - as the tombstones are known - lie across Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia and could make the perfect destination for history enthusiasts.
Mr Biskupic will sign a letter - along with his counterparts in the other countries - to support the bid to have the Stecak, which weigh around three tonnes each, included in a new world heritage site.
World heritage site status could lead to the tombstones receiving greater protection and maintenance work - which may result in an enhanced experience for visitors.
Earlier this month two Croatian fishermen discovered an ancient Greek statue - which may also have been leading history fans to book a holiday on the Adriatic coast.
