Awards ceremony to take place in Split

Split is set to host an awards ceremony this Friday, revealing which community has won the European Entente Florale contest, it has been reported.

According to the Garstang Courier, 12 towns and villages have been entered into this year's competition, which aims to improve the quality of life in these areas.

Participants come from across Europe and include the host, Split, and nearby Novi Vinodolski as Croatia's representatives.

Members of the Bloom Committee for Garstang, which is the village representing the UK at the event - Plymouth is the town - have already arrived for the competition.

Lynn Harter, press officer for the organisation, told the newspaper those who have travelled to Croatia are "very excited".

She added: "We all know how much effort went into our presentation of Garstang to the international jurors and we are all holding our breath and crossing our fingers for a very good result."

The 2007 competition was held in Harrogate in the UK, with Croatia winning silver for the town of Biograd and gold for the village of Primosten.

Shrewsbury and Falkland picked up a top-prize in both categories for the Britain.
