Back injury could end Ljubicic's Croatia Open run
17 July 2008
Ivan Ljubicic's second round match at the Croatia Open is "in question", a tournament official has revealed.
Open director Slavko Rasberger told Associated Press the fifth-seed could be forced to withdraw due to back problems following his 6-1, 6-2 victory over Russian Mikhail Kuskushkin.
He is scheduled to play countryman Roko Karanusic this evening but local reports suggest the Bosnian-born player was taken for medical treatment in a wheelchair yesterday.
The all-Croatian clash between Ljubicic and Karanusic, should it take place, will be followed by the first appearance of Zagreb-born Ivo Karlovic at the tournament.
He is set to play a second-round tie against Argentinian Maximo Gonzalez, his opening match of the tournament for the 29-year-old having been awarded a bye through the first round.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the tournament, top seed Fernando Verdasco beat French qualifier Mathieu Montcourt 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in his second-round tie, while third seed and five time Croatia Open champion Carlos Moya came from behind to win 3-6,7-6 (7-2), 7-5 against Serbian Viktor Troicki.
