Big screens set for Croatia humour showcase
02 April 2008
The world's film fans will be treated to a touch of "quintessential" Croatian humour as the nation's big-screen maestros take their work on tour.
Seven internationally-acclaimed movies made in the eastern European country will be shown at festivals taking place throughout this month.
Audiences in South Africa will get to see Rajko Grlic's pre-war epic Border Post and Ognjen Svilicic's Armin for free, with the films already receiving lavish praise at California's Palm Springs event and New York's Tribeca film festival.
"This year's selection of dramas and comedies tell humane stories that will capture the imagination with their universal themes, and in some cases displaying quintessential Croatian humour," remarked Natali Lulic Grozdanoski, first secretary of the Croatian Embassy.
She singled out Hrvoje Hribar's What is a man without a moustache? for its particularly "funny and engaging" qualities.
Based on the novel by Ante Tomiæ, the film tells the story of a young widow in Dalmatia who tempts a priest who happens to be a recovering alcohol addict.
Svilicic's Armin, Croatia's entry for this year's Palm Springs bash, scooped the FIPRESCI gong for Best Foreign Language film, with judges praising its sensitive portrayal of a father-son relationship.
