Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro invited to join Adriatic Charter
26 September 2008
The Adriatic Charter, which consists of Croatia, Albania and Macedonia, has invited two Balkan states to join their group seeking membership to the NATO alliance, it has been revealed.
According to Sean McCormack, a spokesman for the New York state department, the proposal was made at a meeting in the city to coincide with the UN General Assembly, reports earthtimes.org.
Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro are the two countries given the opportunity to join the programme, which was setup in 2003 under US supervision.
Mr McCormark told the news provider: "This decision was made in the firm belief that this expansion of the charter will further strengthen mutual cooperation and advance Euro-Atlantic integration."
The two countries joining the Adriatic Charter follows their decision to take part in the new Union for the Mediterranean at the same time as Croatia, Albania and Monaco earlier this year.
It was reported by eubusiness.com that the group has been setup to cement a partnership between Europe, north Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans.
