Celebrate winter in Dalmatia
10 December 2007
The island of Pag in northern Dalmatia celebrates an amazing winter carnival from mid-January until Ash Wednesday.
This colourful festival is based around an ancient legend of a female slave who is sold into bondage and then escapes to freedom.
Called Paska Robinja, the performance of the legend involves of singing and dancing with wooden axes.
Robinja is played by a man wearing a kerchief and 'she' must triumph against the evil salesman and his aides, who are all related to the time when Dalmatia was ruled by the Ottomans.
As well as this interesting local tradition there is plenty of entertainment going on in the Petar Kresimir IV square, as well as delicious food and drink available.
The carnival is centred around the town of Pag, which is a stunning medieval urban landscape of towers and fortresses.
You can stay on the island or, if you are based in accommodation in Croatia, the island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and there are also regular ferry services.
Pag is also well-known for its cheese, traditional lace and great beaches.
