Charity ski event lined up for Zagreb

Some of the world's most acclaimed skiers are descending on Croatia for a major charity race this weekend.

The mixed-sex slalom event is to take place this Sunday (February 17th) on Mount Medvednica, which overlooks Zagreb.

According to the AFP, the race will feature the likes of Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark, Italy's Alberto Tomba, Croatian Olympic medallist Janica Kostelic and Marc Girardelli from Luxembourg.

Following the lead of a number ski events organisers - both the men's and women's World Cup slaloms are taking place in Zagreb this month - the charity race is intended to raise money for a children's hospital in Gornja Bistra, near Zagreb.

Tomba, Kostelic, Stenmark and Girardelli will be ranked as top seeds and will only be able to compete against each other in the semi-finals of the contest.

Zagreb, the Croatian capital and the largest city in the country, also hosted the European figure-skating championships last month.

Mount Medvednica's highest peak is Sljeme, which stands at 1,033 metres high, while most of the mountain comprises a nature park.ADNFCR-1197-ID-18464237-ADNFCR
