Christmas sweets in Croatia

People on holiday in Croatia this Christmas should look out for the country's traditional Christmas sweet.

Makovnjaca is a poppy seed speciality served on Christmas Eve by Croatian families after their celebratory dinner. They drink brandy or schnapps mixed with honey with dinner.

The word makovnjaca means "rolled" and Croatian people all over the world follow the custom by making this sweetbread at Christmastime.

If you're spending Christmas in a Croatian villa you could try making the speciality yourself.

A yeasty dough is covered with a mixture of finely ground poppy seeds, lemon rind, raisins, sugar and cinnamon as well as cream, honey and rum. Then the delicious combination is rolled up and baked.

It is usual to eat fish on Christmas Eve in Croatia (dried salted cod if you're on the Dalmatian coast) and feast on suckling pig on Christmas Day.
