Commission backs Slovenian EU presidency proposals

Margot Wallstroem, the vice president of the European Union, has revealed that the commission is fully supportive of the list of priorities drawn up by Slovenia for the country's term as head of the 27-nation bloc.

Slovenia assumed the EU presidency from Portugal on January 1st and aims to work towards the smooth ratification of the recently-signed EU reform treaty, address the future of the western Balkans and tackle climate change.

Ms Wallstroem was speaking at a joint press conference held with Slovenian prime minister Janez Jansa following "substantive" talks between the commission and the Slovenian government.

The meeting was held in order that the key issues facing the Slovenian presidency could be discussed.

"Today excellent cooperation has been established between the Slovenian government and the European Commission," Mr Jansa said after the first session of meetings.

Talks would ordinarily have involved Jose Manuel Barroso, but the commission president is ill with flu and was unable to attend the event held in Brdo pri Kranju, Ljubljana
